Take Your Daughter to Work Day

Joan Reginaldo
0/5 ( ratings)
Planning to go off-world to escape her average life as soon as she graduates from college, Anne Dwarding figures it’s no big deal to do one last Take Your Daughter to Work Day at her mom’s company. The last-ditch effort for mother-daughter bonding makes Anne feel pity towards her mom, who landed the enviable job of working for the biggest tech company in the solar system but chose the least glamorous position: transportation route analysis.

But the routes on her mom’s computer look like they lead to cities that shouldn’t exist, in countries Anne knows by different names. When Anne’s mom invites her on a quick trip to one of these impossible destinations, Anne realizes her mom has been hiding not just a secret life, but a secret job, a secret mission, and access to countless universes where myths and legends are actually historical moments in alternate universes.

Then tragedy strikes, stranding Anne in an alternate universe where Spanish explorers never claimed the Philippines for Spain. Anne takes the first opportunity to befriend someone who speaks her language and offers her the slim possibility to find a way home. Someone who looks, sounds, and even has the same name as her mom: Jessica.

There, the similarities end. Jessica is militant and aggressive, the exact opposite of the boring mom whose highlight of the year was Take Your Daughter to Work Day. But Jessica, and Jessica’s mysterious associate, who claims to wield the legendary sword Excalibur, are Anne’s only leads to returning to the universe she knows as home. They just have to keep from killing each other long enough to figure out which universe Anne came from.
