This 2016 fantasy short story, free to read online at Fireside Fiction, is one of the 2017 Nebula award nominees. Final review, first posted on Fantasy Literature: In this portal fantasy, Ellie has happily traveled back and forth between our world and a magical fantasy world, where her best friend Zera lives. Sometimes she ages while she’s in the magical world, but she’s always six years old again when she returns. But now for some reason the portal has stopped working for her. Ellie writes plea...
This probably shouldn't even count for a book bc it was so short and sweet, but I'm absolutely in love with the idea. I came upon it from a tumblr post about adventure/fantasy protags being forced back into their own world after saving the other world they were a hero in and not wanting to go back and this was one of like the four or five instances of this trope that people had come across. A super easy read and very good! I really liked "rose-petal rope and dewdrop boots, a jacket spun from bee...
“This is Not a Wardrobe Door” by A. Merc RustadQuirky brief tale using clever juxtapositions of terms and images. ***
From the description I read of this story I thought it could be cute - the story of two young people, in different worlds, each trying to get back through the 'magic door' to find their friend. Unfortunately, I found the writing to be overly twee and the 'message' to be overly heavy-handed.
I read this for the second time and it's absolutely wonderful. It has a nonbinary sapphic main character, and it's pretty short, but I just love stories that play with portal fiction and doorways and what happens /after/.
This story feels like growing up.As a child we create magical realms with imaginary creatures and landscapes - they become our "bestfriend", our home. We feel like we can't live without them. We fall in love with our imaginary characters. But slowly we grow up - our day-to-day life, school, new places fill our life. Our world changes. We fall in love again, this time probably with a real person who also lost their childhood love before. We still remember and sometimes (like two or three times a ye...
The passing of time for a child who had entered a fantasy land in her closet, seen from both her eyes and that of her fantasy friend.
I love that kind of nostalgy
A beautiful short story, written by somebody that grow up reading Narnia, and rebelling against the rule that prevents grown-ups to go through the gate. As other reviewers said, this is a nostalgic revisitation of an old trope, and a rebellion against it. Last, but not least, despite the short length of this work, the characters are well drawn and well rounded.
Actual Rating - 2.5 stars.Okay-ish story, but liked it. Illustration is beautiful.
Meh. Interesting but doesn’t quite work for me.Read in Best SFF Stories 2017
I like the message, although I wish it wasn't delivered so bluntly. Yet I accept the lack of finesse because it's a short story and I could see that some might appreciate or even need the overt stating, not have the concept danced around or only hinted at.
Eh, did not do much for me. Instead I’d recommend Probably Still the Chosen One by Kelly Barnhill.
I have read a short book of 9 pages for very first time .And it was amazing...I am enthralled by unique experience of it.The story is of girl who moved between fantasy and real world. But suddenly door is broken and it does not work anymore.
