An interesting little fic.Feels.
Touching.
A short story, partially told in list-format, about a young girl who wants to become a robot. Telsa works as a barista and hides herself in fake relationship with a gay man, all the while connecting only with the robotic server at the coffee shop. The list-sequence offers a neat device to chronicle Tesla's mental decline after she loses her job and tries to rebuild her beloved robot. The story hit me in the feels, in a way that I wasn't expecting.
A very sweet, and realistic story portraying depression and love.
Merc Fenn Wolfmoor (formerly writing under A. Merc Rustad) has a staggering and unique imagination. For that and so many more reasons I plan to track down and read everything of theirs I can get my hands on. Very nice, very sad, very painful and very beautiful little read.
3.5Above average short story, quite original. At first I thought that Tesla was a man, but she is a woman. This is LGBT story though: there are a gay couple, a lesbian couple, and Tesla is probably asexual.
Read this with the lovely people in the group Worlds Beyond the Margins! Honestly, I was floored by how good this story was. Writing about depression can get to be too much very quickly, but with this story, the way it was handled, it allowed enough of a window for the reader to experience the protagonist's turmoil while still having some breathing room. I also liked how the author subverted the asexual = robot myth and weaved some interesting themes throughout this story.
Was not prepared for such an aggressive case of The Feels.brought to you by the Short Story of the Week crew at Worlds Beyond the Margins
I recommend this short from a few years ago and its sharp look at depression. The author now writes as Merc Fenn Wolfmoor. You can find this story in their collection So You Want to be a Robot and Other StoriesIt's also available for free online: @ Lightspeed MagazineOr listen for free: @ Glittership Podcast
