In the third volume, we return to the cool Haun artwork (except in one section) and some of the political intrigue of the first volume. This, like the second volume, appears to be yet another prequel to the first volume, which helps us make more sense of the geo-political dimensions of The Beauty, this disease that most everyone seems to want to catch. The first volume tells a story of Big Pharm greed and political corruption, a large-scale thriller, just as we begin to see that getting The Beau...
Starts off with a fantastic solo issue of what it is like for someone who is naturally handsome in a world containing the Beauty. Women assume Joe has the Beauty and either like or hate him for it.Then we get a police procedural about two different people going around killing those with the Beauty. The city has set up a Beauty task force to deal with crimes against those with the STD. The story focuses on this team as they try to catch the killers. My one complaint about the story is how quickly...
The concept of the Beauty has always been interesting, but this volume has basically turned the story into a fairly pedestrian procedural. Two separate Beauty killer cases end up intertwined while the Beauty task force deals with press connections. There's a really big coincidence that allows the cases to be resolved relatively quickly, and while Beauty does play into their motivations (and one of the killers' methods of murder are disturbing), it really feels a bit like a TV crime episode. If t...
It has been a while since I read a volume of this series. While I could not remember some of the specifics, this is a story that was very easy to get back into quickly.I continue to be impressed with the unique/creative storyline used for this graphic novel; an STD that makes you beautiful and the speculation of what the ramifications of such an illness might be. You would think it would be as easy as,”Hey, I can have sex and get beautiful”, but nothing is ever that straightforward. I really enj...
As the beauty virus devastate its victims, the reader is convincingly devastated by the tales of such devastation.
The Beauty Vol. 3 (issues 12-16) is a prequel to Volume one and we are back to detectives Drew Foster and Kara Vaughn and how they started on the newly formed Beauty Task Force. It’s nice to be back with them in this police procedural and get a bit of back story of both Foster and Vaughn as they hunt for maybe more than one serial killer.Themes: it’s a prequel, The Narcissus killer, some people are willing to die to get The Beauty and some will kill you for having it. 4 Stars
Although I loved the first part with Joe who is so pretty everyone assumes he is infected, the rest of this volume was less compelling. It wasn't bad but it was my least favorite volume so far. It needed more average Joe and less Beauty serial killers. The concept of this series is absolutely brilliant and even a so-so volume of The Beauty is worth reading.
I was disappointed in this 3rd volume of the series. It's another prequel to Vol. 1. Long-run, sure, this makes for a more rounded story and further exploration of the thematics. I just don't think this volume stacks up with Vol. 1 as a standalone read and that is causing me to lose interest in the series. The artists and art keeps changing, too, and that is getting annoying. As for the content of this one? Seems a bit pedestrian, without the edge I liked so much in the earlier volumes. The poli...
What price are you willing to pay for The Beauty? The STI that makes a person's flaws go away is one of the most sought after things in this society. which makes the apparently unwarranted murder of the Beauties so shocking. Can the detectives of the new Beauty Task Force find the killer before the killer finds their next victim? This series has blown me away from the start. The artwork is fantastic and the entire concept is just so different and well executed. I think it is a very fair question
3.5 stars.
Volume 3 continues to explore the impact The Beauty was having on the world before the action of volume 1. While I am keen to see the story progress I am now enjoying seeing the world and players solidifying and gaining firmer edges. The first chapter is (what appears to be) a stand alone story about the better-then-average-looking Joe navigating interpersonal relationship in a world with The Beauty. It's the type of story I was excited to see. The concept of The Beauty feels ripe for these expl...
An STD that makes us beautiful - do we even need protection? The University of Michigan conducted a study that concluded beautiful people have higher salaries and better social skills, as they are perceived as mentally healthier than ugly people. This made me believe that everyone who would chase after the beauty virus was after a promotion or a stable relationship. It was refreshing to see most of the characters in this volume had entirely different reasons. A burn victim, a trans, a hunted man....
Strange serial killings. The problems of having The Beauty. If you were already beautiful then it's hard for people to beliee that you weren't infected. The world that is being created is interesting as well.
this is an interesting series, i just keep forgetting to read it. also the timeline is throwing me off, but im sure thats just a me problem
