While Carolyn Nowak has done a number of work-for-hire stints (Buffy, etc.), her solo indie work has rapidly grown into some of the best English-language comics currently going (just check out the comics collected in her incredible solo book Girl Town). Her new Eisner-nominated single-issue comic, No Better Words, is erotic, sweet, and most shocking of all, very, very smart. Its final two pages are some of the most charged words I have ever read about what it feels like to fall hopelessly, helpl...
I loved this book. This is what I want from comic/illustrated erotica ; simple, a little back story but not too much exposition, a narrator you relate to and feel for, the act of intimacy and resolution, or, at least, an ending. I think this book was colored in an appropriate way - with BLUSHES of vivid color on the cheeks of the flirting protagonists and vividly colored and illustrated sex. The female character in this book is so many of us, of any gender, who chases after someone and gets what...
Wow! Umm this story was unexpected. It was kind of hot. I actually want to have this little novel for my bookshelf. I really liked the poetry aspect of it but not so much the quickness.
A very short story. More like a scene. I liked the art of the woman—she was beautifully and refreshingly drawn, but the guy really had that 1950s American comic art style going on, which was kinda... ugh. The story was so ordinary as to be pointless. Like, the most boring vanilla sex ever. I did not pick up on any tension or tingles, nadda. Read for the art. There was one funny scene that had me laughing out loud, but I don't think it was meant to be funny... something about taking her shoes off...
Be patient as I read every single Silver Sprocket indie comic book that I discovered on Hoopla. I don't know the press background, but all these I have been reading are from women, largely about women. This one was nominated for the 2019 Eisner One-Shot comic of the year and is compelling, a 28-page story about a woman falling for a guy. That's it. A close look at one instance of desire. She gets a little crazy, obsessive, can't stop thinking of him, lies to him about a sex dream she had about h...
The scripting is a stretch for me, and the various metaphors felt kind of extra and a little non sequitur, but the art is well done and I’m really impressed with how well such a brief one-shot can capture the power of desire and lust. It’s nostalgic seeing all those raw and youthful emotions laid out. If there were more to this story, I’d be interested in seeing where it went. R-rated for graphically explicit content and language, but a good read if you’ve got a few minutes to kill and no one lo...
A small piece of a larger story that I'd like to read. I enjoyed it for what it is, but would like a longer version.
Jess Fink said it was great, so why not? No Better Words is cute and sexy. I would have preferred a bit more context/plot/character, but for a smut comic, it's got great art and good pacing :)
This sexually explicit erotica is a hot and heavy quickie romance. Once again Carolyn Nowak gives me a really good middle chapter from a longer book I wish existed.
The author did a great job capturing the painful side of an all-encompassing crush via metaphor; however, this graphic novel was too short to make much impact on me.
