I *loved* this book. The evocative, poetic language just begs to be read aloud to a child. Children won't get all of the language, but the rhythm and general sense will remain. I also love how all the different browns come together into a beautiful whole quilt at the end, just like the girl. I like how different experiences are wordlessly accepted, like the brother in a wheelchair, or the friends jumping into piles of leaves who just happen to wear hijabs. And my absolute favorite picture is of
The illustrations in this book are beautiful.
First thing: The illustrations in this picture book are transcendent! Kaylani Juanita is certainly establishing herself as a children's illustrator to know. While I really liked her artwork for last year's When Aidan Became a Brother, I love what she's done here. The warm, autumnal color palette exudes coziness, while the many laughing, beaming faces she lovingly renders are rosy and glowing with a sense of belonging and familiarity. Best of all, disabled folks (a grownup wears a hearing aid, a
Jacqueline Woodson says this book is “Absolutely lovely” and she is absolutely right. This book will make your day! The words, the illustrations- beautiful. It will make you feel at home 🏡
An exploration of a color, both as a human identifier and in nature.
This book is a verbal and visual celebration of being comfortable in the gorgeous skin that you are in. The lyrical poetic language is inspiring and heartwarming making it a perfect story to share one-on-one. Little girls express the different shades of brown that they witness around them in the world. They compare the tones they find to different physical and personality attributes that they possess. They use terms such as: deep secret brown... like my eyes, feathery brown...like my lashes, am...
A wonderful poem about the celebration of being comfortable in one's own skin, and all the joy it brings when compared to the simple and natural elements of life and memories of family.
I really enjoyed Kaylani Juanita's illustrations made with "digital art, scanned textures and pencil." They're joyful and filled my heart with love and happiness. The one of the black father hiking with his daughter — that's an image I've never seen even hinted at in a children's book, yet it's so natural and not highlighted in any way. My favorites are the solo images of the girl being goofy and the one with friends building sandcastles. The book is a poem. I think a mother with a mellifluous vo...
I thought that this book was a great representation of #ownvoices because it emphasizes the beauty of the color brown. It speaks on many different shades of natures brown, such as tree branches, honey, caramel and others and relates them to a little girl. She says that her eyes are brown like the branches and that her hair is honey and I think that this is a great book for young children of color because it shows them that brown is beautiful.
A lovely homage to a lesser loved color: Brown. Through poetic prose, the book illustrates the rich hues in all the different shades of brown, of beautiful skin tone, it reads as a love letter to every child of color (and the child of color inside us adults of color). You’ll never look at brown the same again, it is uplifting in its diversity. What a gem of a book.
The illustrations are beautiful and the words are passionate but the some vocabulary used are more advanced than normally seen in picture books.
ALL the stars!! Love this gorgeous book. Beautiful words match comforting illustrations. Perfection. I enjoyed this book as a virtual read-aloud with Samara Cole Doyon. I look forward to our library getting a print copy, very soon...
This book is an encouraging and empowering love letter to many different shades of brown found on many different shades of people. The rich poetic text is powerful and I can see parents and teachers wanting a copy of this book on their shelves to impart a positive message to the kids in their lives. I don't know that it's a book I necessarily see kids reaching for themselves, but with the right adult to share it, I think it's an inspiring book.
Embracing yourself, your culture, your color.
These illustrations are so exquisite. The detail is darling and really brings the characters of these families to life! The text is very poetic/literary feeling, and it might be tricky for younger children to get the format, but has very lush metaphors that older kids and adult will swoon over.
This is truly a beautiful book. When it comes to the #ownvoices movement, while it is clearly from the stance of Black voices, Magnificent Homespun Brown: A Celebration includes so many other voices. When it comes to picture books, voices do not have to speak to be heard. Illustrated are different types of hairstyles (every character has their hair done differently), positive representation of disabilities (the main character’s little brother and her friend with Vitiligo), as well as an inclusiv...
Thank you to Netgalley and Tilbury House Publishers for a copy of this book to read in exchange for an honest opinion. "Radiant brown, like my skin" is the declaration of the narrator of this children's book. This book is an incredibly beautifully written joyful celebration. Every child of color should have this book. It is extremely poetic and moving. The main character goes through the shades of brown, celebrating the beautiful things that come in that shade. She compares shades to her eyes an...
Amber brown.Like honey harvested from the hive in Auntie's yard.A sacred, healing elixir, a balm for beleagueredvoices and aching throats, born from the billowing bustle of industriousbees, stretching into a soft, squiggly line as itslips from the spigot to the bottle. This is yet another picture book for adults disguised as one for children. Were I to have viewed it as something aimed at adults, I probably would've liked it better. The words are evocative, and I like the way each flowery descripti...
A joyous celebration of ones culture.
This is beautiful, powerful writing and illustrations. The book is poetry with the most beautiful, positive, diverse illustrations to accompany. Cannot recommend enough, this is so uplifting and special. Truly a celebration!
