This story is very sweet, but the real star of the show is the illustrations. Kaylani Juanita is so phenomenally talented. ALSO there are two disabled characters who interact with one another! There is a man (not an old man either!) who uses a cane (!!) and does story time (!!!). His cane looks like a goose which is so flippin cool and I want it.
4.5 stars. This was a good reminder that no matter how small a kindness is, it is still important. Multiple small kindnesses can build into something beautiful.
After a budding environmentalist schools an old man about the individual impact that stems from small acts of kindness, a ripple effect inspires a young child to help an elderly neighbor, an edgy teen makes lunch for an unhoused neighbor, and a fashionable actor to volunteer his time. I loved this book, I loved the illustrations (the characterizations are amazing), I loved that the edgy teen is also classy, and I loved the young girl's determination and style!
This is a nice enough story. The idea is nice, but it is taken from a very short story of a little girl who is throwing starfish back into the ocean. This book expands on the shorter version, but I think it loses something in the process.
This was a wonderful “pay-it-forward” story for children that shows that even the smallest acts of kindness or generosity towards others make a huge difference in the grand scheme of things! I think I see awards in this book’s future!
Does the little boy like butter on his noodles AND on his brightly colored shoeless, or does he like butter on his noodles and also like brightly colored shoelaces? Why is her loose tooth so prominent?! Ahhhhhh!!!
This is touching and lovely in such a wonderful, heartfelt way. Such a beautiful message without rubbing your faces in it. And the representation! I just love it all so much!
The specificity and connectivity of this one are marvelous and will inspire all kinds of kindness.

See my full review here: https://www.yabookscentral.com/kidsfi...THE LITTLE THINGS is a charming and powerful story about the contagious nature of kindness. A little girl heads to the beach after a storm and notices so many sea stars have washed ashore. She rushes to help them back into the ocean, and as she is doing so, an old man asks her why she bothers when she cannot save them all. When she tells him each one matters, he takes this to heart and later takes his grandson to pick a dog that wa...
This was a good example of kindness and caring for the sea creatures and people after a big storm. Written about a young girl who picks up sea stars and puts them back in the ocean, a boy who helps clean up a yard after the storm, and a man and boy who adopt a dog, and a teen who feeds a homeless person. Examples of kindness acts to share. FICTION
take time to make a difference
A pay it forward story. After a young, Black girl with three ponytails is seen helping sea stars back into the ocean after a storm, an old man is inspired to complete an act of kindness. Unknowingly, the girl with three ponytails spurs her entire town to practice kindness and community building. It also shows folks different talents and how people can be affected individually and as a collective! Thanks to the publisher for a review copy.

This wonderful picture book follows several characters, starting with a young black girl (with three gorgeous teal pigtails) who finds tons of starfish have washed ashore after a storm. As she spends her afternoon putting starfish back in the water, a man approaches her to ask her why she bothers — she won’t be able to save all the starfish. The girl acknowledges she won’t be able to save them all, but that she can make a difference for each starfish she saves. This message sticks with the man a...
This book begins with the old "Saving a Starfish" story, but then expands it outwards - showing how a single act of kindness can inspire other single acts without being overly didactic. Great illustrations as well.
This picture book is a 3.5 for me, and I certainly would suggest including it as a first-day-of-class read aloud to set the tone for a classroom. Although I've heard similar stories about how one small act of kindness has a ripple effect and that even though it might seem to make only a tiny difference, it makes all the difference in the world to the person or animal to whom it is extended, this picture book is touching in its simplicity and in showing exactly how others are affected. A compassi...
Not so much pay-it-forward as a story of inspire-it-forward. A person does a kind/good act and it is witnessed. The witness then does their own kind/good act, which is witnessed by someone else when then is inspired to do their own kind/good act. We see the impact it makes on a small coastal community after a storm.Lots of silly extra details about each person involved. The acts of kindness include* Rescuing starfish stranded on the beach* Adopting a dog from a shelter* Cleaning a neighbor's yard...
Welp, I started crying two pages in, so obviously it's wonderful.
