A long, long, long, looooong and painfully average arc that feels like a PG-13 version of Garth Ennis's The Boys. Not a great look for a series that had great interpersonal relationships to suddenly turn into a one-woman show where Gert is the only sane person trying to Nancy Drew her team out of this one.
ABSOLUTELY AMAZING! That ending was superb. This is probably my favorite volume to date.
It took 17 years... 17 years for The Runaways to finally become a super-hero team! But how, when, why, you ask? Rowell pushes a lot of boundaries as she composes a tale that sees The Runaways go against the core of what they are, and become crime fighters. It's a pretty good story, but it all escalates too quickly and everyone pretty much keeps to a linear characterisation of themselves in this unforeseen eventuality. 7 out of 12... and the big news is that post first Pandemic lockdowns this is
This volume finally picks up the pace, making for a story with all the tropes I love - and, as Doc Justice would say, a healthy dose of Found Family.
I'd say that 75% of this was a 2-star book, but the ending kinda redeemed it somewhat. I really liked the original Runaways, but what Rainbow Rowell has done to this series is appalling. Took a great angsty teen team book and made it into YA drivel.
I... don't know know how to judge this.Clearly, this whole storyline is mocking 90s comics. A lot of the costumes are very reminiscent of 90s style. The idea of an adult leader organizing a group of younger heroes (many of whom die) is similar to the X-Men (who were most popular in the 90s). The concept of heroes choosing to fight the good fight, and being willing to sacrifice their lives for the sake of the cause, just feels so *retro*. And that is my biggest problem here. Sure, I'm all for mak...
Meet the Marvel Universe's newest superhero fighting force - Doc Justice, and the J-Team! But wait, where are the Runaways? This volume seems to be moving away from the original Runaways idea, but there's a damn good reason for it. As the mystery of Doc Justice and the J-Team grows ever more ominous, most of the team begin to lose themselves in the mystique and have to be brought back down to earth by one of their own. While this is all going on, there's the same care and careful planning that Ro...
Another truly excellent volume of Runaways. Under the aegis of legendary L.A. superhero Doc Justice, the Runaways (some might say ‘finally’) try their hand at being a superhero team. As you might have suspected, it does not end well.New artist André Genolet is knocking it out of the park. Long may he stay on the book.
My poor children. Also #justiceforChase why does everyone hate him?!
Rowell’s run has been great overall, but this arc was too long. It dragged SO much. I’m sure it reads better in a collected volume, but reading it monthly was torturous. Still, the art is consistently great, and the final issue is actually fantastic. But this could have been five issues instead of seven... 4/5 stars.
An ambitious Runaways storyline, with the crew becoming full-fledged superheroes for a while. They're under the mentorship of one Doc Justice, and while his true intentions are predictable, the journey to the reveal is mostly satisfying. I especially like the spotlight on Gert in this volume. And the final issue poses some intriguing questions.
Having been buffeted by the tides and wind for the longest time, the Runaways decide to choose a course and try the costumed superhero thang. Results are to be expected, but it's a fun ride with Rowell's clever dialogue and little twists and fine art from Andrés Genolet and Kris Anka.
I feel like I've seen Evil Batman any number of times. What makes this book good has almost nothing to do with the "main" story—these characters are just all well-drawn.When are we going to get a Gib ongoing?
An unbelievable end to a great arc. I'm already exited for the next one!
Canon Fodder is probably the most clever and accurate name for a Marvel comic collection that I've come across in some time. It's neatly tied to the plot in a few smart ways. Good choice, editors!Aside from the title, this Runaways volume continues to contain good stuff. The characters are all nice and fun and fresh. The twist is apparent from miles away, but it's still a good, involving read. Rowell paces the volume a bit slower to really draw out the eventual dramatic turn. The art is good, no...
This arc was so good, but so painful too. Gert is my favourite and this definitely wasn't the happiest time for her. She's still a damn badass, though. I love all these characters. (view spoiler)[And I'm so glad none of them died! And that Doc did die! Fucking piece of shit. Poor Victor, though, he was such a sweet fanboy. But threaten Gert and you'll have him to deal with. (hide spoiler)]That last page, though! Sucks (but understandable) that the next arc has been pushed back. Can't wait to see...
OMG I JUST READ THIS VOLUME IN ONE SITTING AND WOW!!! I need volume 6 asap!!!! Loved this one the most and I gasped twice in this volume...
As usual, this book is a delight. The art is clean and cute. The story of the found family continues in an interesting way. I must say, the twist was pretty obvious. Other than that, good stuff. On that twist: I interpret it as a meta-commentary on comic books at large. The villain kills of what he views as supporting characters in order to boost his own popularity. This is reminiscent of the “fridging” dynamic, in which love interests (particularly women) are killed off to forward the (usual mal...
This story arc was my favorite volume of Rainbow Rowell’s run so far! I did miss Kris Anka style of art (so angular and wonderful) but Andes Genolet’s art was good and action packed. What an ending!!
A solid entry in the series with a good (if pretty bleak) and cohesive plotline. However my overall engagement and enjoyment level with this series seems to max out at three stars. I just don't care a whole lot, plus it takes forever to get a new volume from the library so I always forget what happened in the last one... Eh, still pretty good!
