[This review covers Volumes 11-13 of MMPR, the Necessary Evil event]Necessary Evil extends into the Mighty Morphin' title, as Jason, Zack, and Trini head off on a secret mission that threatens the entire universe as the Omega Rangers, while new recruits Rocky, Aisha, and Adam struggle to fit into the new team dynamic as Lord Zedd steps up to battle the original Power Rangers! After the experiment of Beyond The Grid, Necessary Evil is the aftermath to Shattered Grid that we really needed/deserved....
This volume officially kicks off the new arc: Necessary Evil with the newest addition to the Omega Ranger team Kiya adhering to the mantra “the ends justifies the means” as she turns against the path she was set upon. Though I’m a bit ambivalent to Kiya and perhaps a bit annoyed at the tired alien person is the traitor trope, I do think this arc might prove interesting as it moves forward.Overall, this was a good volume in that we had a lot of growth points for the main ranger characters across
The Omega zords come in to help! And the Omega rangers leave without speaking. I love the tension between the two ranger teams. These comics continue to show such interesting perspectives that didn't exist within the original show. Bulk interviews the public about this new Power Ranger team. Tommy and Jason having conversations about leadership that weren't able to happen in the show is so cool to see, especially when we know Jason is now an Omega ranger but Tommy doesn't. Jason fighting Zedd is...
The split team doesn't stay split too long as the Omega Rangers make a fatal mistake, creating a new enemy they might not be able to handle. This is another really solid volume. Ever since Parrott took over it has only gotten better. With the art still super solid for fight scenes, character growth from everyone, and an ending that left me going "how do they get out of this?" I'm excited to read the final two volumes before the rebirth of the new series.
Uh oh...one of their own have betrayed them and become the defacto villain of the Necessary Evil run. Kiya takes out their leader and now is on a quest to destroy the Power Rangers to "protect" the galaxy from anything like Shattered Grid ever happening again. The Omega Rangers need to come together with the Mighty Morphin Rangers in order to take out this new threat.
Two ranger teams! New developments with Zedd and co, and a betrayal that brings all the threads together. This volume had a lot of drama as Kim and Tommy lose trust in their old friends, and the Omega Rangers make the choice to return to Earth after one of their own goes rogue. Also the covers for this volume were amazing.
The artwork is just so inconsistent. Some pages look great, others it's impossible to tell what exactly is happening in a panel(s). Just when the story starts to get good, the volume end. The story also lacks the same high stakes as earlier arcs.
