L’arma della fame. Il blocco navale e le sue conseguenze sulla popolazione civile (1915-1919)

L’arma della fame. Il blocco navale e le sue conseguenze sulla popolazione civile (1915-1919)

Bruna Bianchi
4/5 ( ratings)
The essay focuses on the “starvation blockade” during the First World War, a policy responsible of the death of thousands of civilians in Germany, Austria and in occupied countries. The British strategy, in fact, ascribed enormous importance to restricting importations of food and raw materials to continental Europe as the major factor in winning the war. Moreover, the blockade of Germany and Austria was maintained for months after the Armistice. Many pacifists and humanitarians, mainly British and mainly women, perceived this policy as a crime against humanity, a “crime of the statesmen” and put at the top of their campaign the condemnation of the blockade. Their writings and their reports are precious sources from which to reconstruct living conditions in Central and East Europe.
