WHAT WAS WRITTEN IN THIS PIECE OF PAPER ??? Sally Rooney i need answers and i want them RIGHT NOW. also, reading this with the article 'Sally Rooney on Being Seen by Others' gave me an intellectual orgasm 😩 so you should definitely check it out
Classic Sally Rooney, distilled into a short story: love, awkward dialogue, miscommunication, class difference, the trouble of fame vs the trouble of having a shitty job. It's pretty good but left me feeling a little empty-handed. I think her writing probably just works better at novel-length.
Somewhere between 3 and 4 stars. I liked the prose and the inner world of the protagonist, his thoughts were characterised in a way that felt natural and easy to understand but still unformed and vague in the way thoughts are. There’s this ineffable quality, though, that makes it feel like a larger story that was severely edited down, and I get this sensation that the edges are tattered where things have been ripped away.
miss Sally Rooney has done it again, such a short story but so engaging and interesting 3.5
"No, he says. Now I would say, I am in no situation at all. I feel like my life basically isn’t happening. I think if I dropped dead the only people who would care are the people who would have to cover my shifts. And they wouldn’t even be sad, they’d just be annoyed." She can't keep doing this to me (writing my life experiences in better words than I could've said it myself)

I haven't read anything by Sally Rooney and if this is an indication of her writing, I probably won't read anything else. Or perhaps it is the limitations of a short story. The only thing I took away is it's about confusion. Confusion about one's place in the world, and how to navigate relationships. I was left empty at the end and thinking "that's it?!"I've never read a lot of short stories before and seem to be adding them in periodically the last few years. I think I'll add a new shelf in whi...

i have gone from liking sally rooney ironically to genuinely being half in love with her
I find it a little bit weird when people claim not to 'get' Sally Rooney. There's nothing to 'get'. Stylistically traditional (while convincingly contemporary in the treatment of her themes), she just ... writes really, really *well*.
