Ironically, shortly after starting Surrounded by Setbacks I was struck by a truck while bicycling home from work. My shoulder was fractured and dislocated; I've been out of work and pretty well defeated since. Even before that, I'd had a ridiculous five years of setbacks—including losing a wife, daughter, job, and more—which is why I requested this Goodread's giveaway book. It seemed appropriate for me.I'm not sure I have much to say about it. Everything anyone really needs to know about "happin...
If you seriously want to get your act together...here's the best book out there for just that! ;)Thomas Erikson has gone the extra mile andwrote a 'one-of-a-kind' book on getting yourselfback on the right track...Highly Recommended...!
You will want this book on your bookshelf to annotate, highlight and dog-ear. Thomas Erikson breaks down the setbacks that are holding you back from living your life fully. He helps you to see the warning signs of decline and commit to no more excuses in moving forward. The development stages are addressed as he takes you through how to gain self-confidence and motivation. The different personality/characteristics “colors” that people have are discussed. These are important to understand to real...
Maybe I'll read it again when I have goals I want to work towards but it wasnt suited for me and my life at the moment. Some parts were motivating but other parts felt very fictional and unrealistic - following Lena's story etc. I didn't like that the author writes about all of his setbacks as a writer as it hones in on one specific unrelatable path. It also poses the question if you've come across all these setbacks as a writer then how are you writing about setbacks? Seems quite contradictory
I'd say the book is more a 3.5. The book is well wrote with no simple fuss free jargon. There were parts I really liked and parts I really disliked. I enjoyed the 8 steps to success section, time management, habits and the whole idea of keeping momentum when you get started and positive complaining. I really disliked the commitment competence framework and the DISC model. Like other readers it feels like the author has created these models to pad out the book and they muddy the waters and actual...
Very standard Adlerian self-help backed up with very little evidence, clinical experience, and with a heavy dose of pseudscientific psychological theory. Not really sure what this book brings to the table. Perhaps more useful repackaging of what's has already been stated elsewhere with useful chapter summaries when you want to skim or review.
One of many motivating self-help books. Positive and supportive touch. Brains are built to notice and remember failures. Remind yourself how your failures probably were not the end (also at a larger scale of humanity) and take the learning side with you. For more positive focus list actively your successes to steer away of endless negative loop.
This book raises some good points, but I expected it to be more like the Obstacle is the Way and it is more for people who feel a bit lazy and need some motivation and tips to continue. I still learnt a lot from the book, and I love the author, but I thought that the book lacked structure and was just a collection of advice about how to succeed in life.
Erikson is like that mean professor in college that gives you a lot of challenges because he knows you can handle them. This book is one a lot of people need to read. He stresses taking responsibility for yourself, changing the course of your life instead of merely letting things happen to you, and working to achieve the goals you want. He is honest with the setbacks he has faced, and he emphasizes giving yourself (achievable) goals to progress to where you want to be. This whole book is inspira...
Bear in mind that I am not an avid non-fiction reader, let alone a self-help book reader so take my review with a grain of salt.I have yet to read Thomas Erikson’s Surrounded by Idiots but this book did touch a little bit on the DISC personalities colours. Now, I have known for quite some time I am a Blue with a dash of Red and Green in my personality. So when he mentioned something in regards of how different colours should perceive their setbacks, I couldn’t help but to relate with the things
This book has some powerful insights in it and I believe that a lot of people will benefit from it. This book helped reinforce what I already know. I am so grateful that I have been on my journey of personal development and self-improvement for many months now. The changes I have seen in my life astound me. I have made waves and I have ridden a lot of waves, thriving and enjoying every high and feeling and experiencing every low, and I've learned so much along the way and I continue to use all t...
Some parts of the book spoke to me, especially on the profiling. It was brutally honest at points, and like facing a mirror- crucially aware of my strengths, my weaknesses and how this affected me in setbacks. I also noticed how the profiles speak accurately for the people around me, and hence the occassional brush in perspective differences. In that sense, this book made me reflect a lot, and came at a right time when I'm navigating setbacks. However, I felt it became too prescriptive/ didactiv...
"How do we learn to take setbacks in stride and still achieve our goals?"This book was a great read. Erikson speaks some harsh truths about the way we handle problems and that adversities can actually be a good thing. They are part of our life, and we must learn how to deal with them to be successful. He gives examples from his personal life and specific examples for 4 different types of personalities, the so called “4-color behavior system”. It is not an exact science, but it makes complete sen...
This is my 3rd book from Erikson (after Surrounded by Idiots and Surrounded by Bad Bosses) and I´m beginning to like his style. The baseline of the book is still the DISC model and his interpretation of it into red, yellow, green and blue behaviour types. In different books he is mixing DISC with other concepts and theories and this book is mainly about personalities VS habits. Power of Habit by Daniel Duhigg and Atomic Habits do give you a stronger methodology for creating and maintaining usefu...

Disclaimer: I receive a free copy of this book in exchange for an honest review.Thank you @definitelyboks for this copy! #pansing"Remember that nobody becomes successful because of what they know or are capable of or say. It is only the actual doing that is going to count."I get why everyone enjoys Thomas Erikson's works. He gets straight to the point; his studies and research make sense.Although some of the things are common knowledge and everything, we as humans sometimes just need to hear it
The power of Habit by Daniel Duhigg and Atomic Habits do give you a stronger methodology for creating and maintaining useful habits, but Erikson`s book definitely complements it further if you are interested. This book is about resiliency and dealing with the concept of setbacks. Drawing on the simple four-color behavior model that was made popular in the book Surrounded by Idiots, Thomas Erikson this read is good to help provide tools to help gain control of your life and pave the way to a bette...
