I did not enjoy this sequel as much the first Mousai book- maybe it was Niya- who I found quite spoiled and abrasive much of the time- or the sea setting at sea which took us away from the Thief Kingdom- but somehow the magic was less for me. I will still read the next in series though as I think this was a particular combination that didn’t quite tick the boxes for me!

I knew it was iffy to pick this one up since the first in the series so vexed me. However, my issues might have been limited to that specific plot, so I gave the sequel a shot.Unfortunately, issues from the previous book did carry over for me-- namely, the focus on morality and torture, which both came up within the first couple chapters as non-mutually exclusive arenas. Oh oh oh!!! I am so so so happy that I was able to read this book because I was dying to read more about the world of Aadilor and see how the story would develop. The story is so very well written, with characters that leap off the page and feel like they are there telling you the story themselves. I almost loved it as much as book 1 but, not quite. I think it's because I felt more of a kinship with the other sister from book 1, Larkyra.
