John Cameron disobeys his grandfather's injunction not to open a carved wooden box on the shelf above the fire and inside it finds an eagle feather. On touching the feather John finds himself in an alien landscape threatened by a mysterious, vaguely glimpsed figure. Fleeing, John encounters a strange man who leads him to the Bird People of River Bend where John learns he is on a Vision Quest and is advised to find an aging seer who should be able to advise him.
