This book is pretty funny. The animals each have their own number and their own page but that doesn't stop them from visiting other pages. Not the best book for learning to count because it could be confusing.
Hilarious "counting" book featuring a mischievous musk ox who won't stay on his page (1 musk ox) and an exasperated zebra who tries to rein him in. Kids won't learn to count with this book, but they'll enjoy it just the same.
I don't know if it will help young children to learn to count, but it's very amusing. Older children who already know their numbers will get a kick out of this book.
Great counting book that also has fantastic art.
Funny, dynamic duo of zany Musk Ox and control-freak Zebra are back. Musk Ox has his own ideas and Zebra gets frustrated trying to get Musk Ox back on track. Will they make it from 1-10?Not only is he AWOL from his own page, but Musk Ox creates chaos on every other page, stealing the show and rewriting the book all while creating bickering banter with Zebra. According to Musk Ox’s absurd logic arithmetic, “8 snakes + 1 musk ox + 1 whiny zebra = 8 legs.” Witty, sharp clever text mixes perfectly w...
We can’t wait to read Musk Ox Counts aloud. The dialogue between Musk Ox and Zebra as they try to create a counting book is hysterical. On each page the students will easily understand these characters/ feelings as they banter back and forth and see the expressions on their faces. One of our favorite pages is when Musk ox and the Zebra lie down on the ground and decide to be stars with five points (1 head, 2 legs and 2 arms) (insert photo)This is another perfect text for teaching students to ret...
This isn't a book that would translate well for the storytime crowd, but it is still a winner and full of quirky humor adults will enjoy just as much as kids. The focus isn't so much on the counting as musk ox succeeds page after page in ruining zebra's plan and annoying his uptight counterpart in the process. This would best be enjoyed with a child who is willing to sit for a longer period of time and pour over every illustration and piece of conversation included.
Age: Kindergarten-2nd gradeMath: Addition, countingThe authenticity of this younger grade school humor rings true with another tale about Ox and Zebra and their opposing viewpoints about the correct format for a counting book. Zebra just wants to have her nicely laid out, planned book executed perfectly but Ox just wants to have fun. Sure to elicit smiles!
This is a cute little book. I love the interactions being Ox and Zebra and the love/hate relationship they have. I would read this with grade 2 or 3 students. I could lead to some interesting conversations about number.
Hilarious. Good science, too; for example a footnote says that musk ox have four stomach chambers, not actually four stomachs. And when one page's animals become prey, Musk Ox reminds us that's not terrible, "That's nature." I like all the addition, too. So funny and fresh. And don't forget to read the cover!I want plush toys of these two friends. Or maybe action figures of them would be more apt.
Was "Z is for Moose" just a little too sweet for you? Musk Ox Counts is perfect for the slightly older reader who loves it when zany hijinks mess with the traditional counting book formula. Expect a little addition, some slapstick humor, and a lot of satisfaction when irreverent Musk Ox shocks his more uptight companion, Zebra. (view spoiler)[ "Remember the birds I scared away? Well, I think they've taken care of the snails./ That's terrible!/ Actually, that's nature." (hide spoiler)]
This is a snarky book about numbers. Our girls loved the dialogue between the zebra and musk ox and the illustrations are hilarious, too. We really enjoyed reading this book together and we are looking forward to reading A Is for Musk Ox, too. This book was selected as an alternate book for the August 2014 - Counting discussion at the Picture-Book Club in the Children's Books Group here at Goodreads.
The Felix and Oscar of children's fiction are back. (I'm probably the only one who ever called them that, but seriously, that zebra is Tony Randall.)Trying to count from 1 to 10 seems simple, but nothing is easy when zebra and musk ox get together. Frustrated zebra just wants to count in a logical, one-to-ten manner. Musk ox (Oscar!) thinks that way is boring and has his own ideas about how to liven up the book.Although I didn't think one was quite as funny as the first, it's still funny, and a
Erin Cabatingan has written another winner!!! This is not a counting book for your two-year-old. This is a thinking child's book. There is addition and subtraction and science and humor thrown in. Matthew Myers illustrations are amazing. I look forward to the next Musk Ox book. Don't tell my grandchildren what book they will be getting for their next birthdays.
Who knew counting could be so much fun? Erin Cabatingan and Matthew Myers keep bringing laughs to learning. I can hardly wait for the next adventure of Musk Ox and Zebra. My full review: http://librariansquest.blogspot.com/2...
Another wonderful Musk Ox book. What a fantastic duo of characters. So much fun. Definitely a multiple reads book.Great for a story times about counting or animals or humor. Better for older story time groups.
The characters from A is for Musk Ox return for a counting book this time. A counting book should be fairly straight forward, it’s counting after all. But Musk Ox has different ideas. Must to Zebra’s dismay, he doesn’t even make it to number one at the beginning of the book to be counted as one Musk Ox. Instead he is on the page with 2 yaks. Musk Ox offers to fix the problem on the page for number one, but still messes up the 2 yaks page. Zebra is beside himself and a sulky Musk Ox heads back to...
I found this completely hilarious, as did my kids (ages 11, 8 and 6). My 3yo didn't get it. It is a "counting book" but not really. It is better for the older reader independently reading it, or if you can do voices to make sure the zebra and musk ox are clearly defined for the story to be funny.Musk ox and Zebra are part of a counting book, but begin arguing with each other, moving from page to page, etc., thus messing up the counting part of the counting book of other animals. Thus the hilarit...
Filled with verbal and visual jokes on every page, the unlikely duo of Musk Ox and Zebra struggle their way through a counting journey that is punctuated by Zebra's efforts to keep Musk Ox's creative ideas in check. Reviewer 21
I truly love the Musk Ox books. In this one Musk Ox and Zebra are in a counting book. Of course Musk Ox messes it all up and Zebra tries to fix everything. I love the rationalizations Musk Ox comes up with. This is funny and interesting. I can't wait to see what this pair gets up to next.
