Having left South Africa as a child, a young man returns to visit the farm he has inherited from his mother, in an attempt to achieve a better understanding of his heritage. The Promised Land has become totally strange to him, but his arrival sets in motion a chain of events which ends in tragedy.

Originally published in Afrikaans under the title Na die Geliefde land, Promised Land was hailed as 'a brilliant piece of work' and 'A masterpiece of low-key writing, understatement, allegory and subtle innuendo.' It has been made into a film which has been selected for the prestigious 2003 Toronto film Festival.
