Well it looks beautiful and the cartooning is extraordinary, like a mix of Mike Mignola and Mike McMahon at their very best and with a brilliant use of colour. The first story is best, even though it is in essence a non story where the actual narrative happens between the narration. The second builds up really well and then literally and figuratively falls to pieces by the end. And the third is a nice idea but is really muddled in the storytelling. So the general impression you get is of a brill...
A nicely produced collection of three short tales with a vintage air to them and good attention to art and layout. Definitely worth a look.
3.5 stars. three great sets of stories. I love Wes Craig's art style and paneling. makes it more of an active read. highly recommended.
I'm a fan of Craig's rough art style, it keeps you looking closer.Grave Diggers Union is more of a trailer or pitch for the series, not much story except for a subtle heartstring tug to pull you deeper at the end.The Circus is beautiful, but what there was of the story didn’t catch me.The Seed was AMAZING and why I am even bothering to write a review: To remind myself later since I know I've read this book before and need to remember just how well this horizontal scroll of a story evolves a sens...
So awesome!! 3 webcomics packaged in a nifty way. All 3 stories are great! Fun and easy read.
So much fun and right in my wheel house.
I was excited when I saw this as any fan of Deadly Class would be. However, this book was boring and just meandered. It contains 3 stories, 2 of which don't have a plot to speak of.
I felt like I was in October Country! The reason I picked this book up was for the grave diggers union original story but all three stories turned out to be great! It starts off with the grave diggers union story actually! The story reads like an old timey service announcement saying we should thank the diggers for all their hard work! With the shape of the book, it feels like a movie reel, totally 20s vibe. The second story was fun and felt like a piece of Bradbury’s something wicked this way co...
Fun compilation of three short stories by Wes Craig, artist of Deadly Class. The Gravedigger's Union is very reminiscent of the adventures of Buffy the Vampire Slayer, Circus Day is a young man's adventures at the circus, and the seed is an adult story of great evil. The art tells the story with very few words, especially in The Seed. A fun, quick read for the spooky Halloween season.
Very cool set of spooky short stories, I will definitely have to check out more of Wes Craig’s work.
(B) 74% | More than SatisfactoryNotes: Basically beat poetry, illustrated energetically, it's avant-garde and artsy fare, but underneath there's not much there.
The Grave Digger's Union (first story) feels like it is narrated by a secular Reverend Knox from Rotters. The second to last page made my entire body pickle up with chills... damn. Just, damn. Often, with graphic novels, I will read reviews that discuss the incredible job the illustrator has done, packing a lot of story into a few panels. But hardly ever have I see that happen so visibly with this collection. The Seed? OOOOOOH.
Loved the first and last of these dark tales. Lovely art & layout, experimental, free. Image pretty much guarantee a good read.
