Isolated from all this, Sir Arthur Ballantyne is an old man living with his half-mad wife in the claustrophobic seclusion of their cold, dark manor house in the Cotswold countryside. Sir Arthur's only son died in 1914 and there is no heir to the title. He will be the last baronet. Now he wants to know exactly how his son died and he is looking for people who can help him find out.
He recruits the woman who was his son's great love. She in turn enlists the aid of the man who was his university tutor. Between them they unearth the truth Sir Arthur is looking for, but it may not be a truth the baronet will welcome.
