In June 1939 when Kit Barrow starts looking for memories of his father, a pilot killed in the previous war, he isn't prepared for what he will find.
His search leads him to a quiet village in the heart of the English countryside where his parents once lived. At least, it's quiet except for one night in the year. Every year on the night of the summer solstice the villagers hold a ritual called the Witching. Nobody knows when or how it started, but they've always done it. They did it when Kit's father lived there and even now, in a changed world with another war looming, they still do it.
The Witching isn't a nice, quaint custom. It's a riotous affair when once a year, for a few hours, conventions are ignored, inhibitions are shed and normal behaviour is suspended. Bad things can happen at the Witching.
