A generation ago boxing ranked a close second behind Major League Baseball as America's favorite sport.
Its popularity attracted legions of followers.
Boxing fans watched their favorite fighters' every move, both inside and outside the ropes. It was much like today's fans who track NFL, MLB, NBA, NHL and FIFA stars on Facebook, Instagram and Twitter.
Over the years, boxing has produced a generous share of unique characters. Most have come with ponderous back stories and assorted personal baggage.
Colorful characters with unbridled egos, unchecked discipline and, at times, horrific personal backgrounds have climbed inside the ring and found themselves embraced and admired by fans outside the ropes.
Sadly, the sport of boxing has declined over the years.
However, despite felony convictions, domestic assaults, mindless spending and outrageous public proclamations, boxers continue to capture headlines and amass scores of fans.
As a lifelong boxing fan, I chronicle my Favorite Boxers in this book.
Not all of my favorites are choir boys, not all are men and one of them isn't even a real person.
Many of my picks would probably appear on most sports fan's list, but a few may surprise you.
My choices are based not only on boxing excellence, but also on a fighter's ability to overcome extraordinary obstacles in life in order to be crowned a champion.
Remember, this is my book and these are my choices.
Read about the incredible story of three troublesome teens who learned to box while in prison or under the care of mentors.
One has done an amazing job of "executing" his fight plan.
Another is more famous today as a marketing pitch man than he ever was as a decorated heavyweight champion.
And, the third has overcome a litany of bad personal choices to emerge as a likable, if improbable, stage and screen performer.
Recall the tumultuous real life of a famous championship fighter whose sordid life story became an Academy Award winning movie that starred Robert DeNiro.
In a sport known for famous nicknames, smile at the famous monikers of these two undersized - but overpowering - punchers.
Laugh at a fictional Italian fighter with a clever nickname and indistinguishable diction who starred in a series of feel good movies.
Marvel at a former nail technician and the daughter of a legendary athlete who won all 24 of her professional bouts.
Respect the business acumen and uncanny boxing ability of another undefeated champ celebrated for his preening confidence and flashy lifestyle.
And, learn about a heavyweight fighter who got his bike stolen as a kid. That singular childhood event inevitably led him on a path to become perhaps the most famous boxer ever.
Enjoy the read and email me at [email protected] if you think a boxer or two should have been included in Favorite Boxers.
Look forward to your comments.
