A story from the Greenstone world. The glassmakers of Vemor envisage a centre of research and innovation to be built in the desert environment of the Rift. But forces opposed to their work are determined to see its destruction. The story follows the fortunes of the town, Kristalion, the lives and loves of its people and their struggle to defend it against the fanatical forces of the Or’Valech. And one man, the Saganian Olle Varelius, injured in a mining accident, undertakes a new career collating all the glass making knowledge into the five great Codices. His innovation creates the weapon of light, which could just be the saviour of the town. It is set two hundred years before the Greenstone Trilogy and provides the back-story for the events in the second, part, Thunderhead.
