In this historical novel the narration of the events that followed the death of Sultan Selim I continues, including the military campaigns for the conquest of Belgrade from the Hungarian kingdom and the island of Rhodes from the Hospitaller Knights.. During this period that ends with the return of Pargali Ibrahim Pasha from Egypt, after the successful completion of his first diplomatic mission to organize the Egypt and the Holy Lands. The events that led to Ibrahim's marriage with Suleiman's sister Hatidge Sultan are also described, as well the roots of the deadly struggle between the Sultan's legal wives Mahidevran and Hurrem Sultan and Ibrahim Pasha are laid down that will reach their dramatic climax in the third volume of the series. In this volume, the first effects of Suleiman's fragile health are described that led to the meteoric rise of Ibrahim who took advantage of the created void of power to reach the highest office of the Ottoman Empire by taking advantage of the Sultan's illness and the general state of moral descent that had started earlier when the results of Selim's impending death became apparent.
