In the distant future in a galaxy far away, genetic engineering is allowed, but there is a catch. It must include strict conditioning to safeguard the status quo. One of the oldest proclamations in the legal code, ‘Thou Shalt Not Kill’, is the basis of all genetic programming.
But war breaks out, and the Genes have to find a way to defend themselves in a society where crime is improbable, and murder is impossible.
On a prison planet after the war is over, the unthinkable happens; a series of killings. Have the ghosts of the past infected the catacombs, or is the unimaginable unfolding, the break-down of genetic conditioning? This is the beginning of an odyssey through the future where the ultimate crime triggers the ultimate sanction. But because of conditioning and programming, it has to be carried out by humanity’s greatest creations, the wielders of the Forfeit. For crime cannot be seen to pay. It does not even exist.
A roller-coaster ride of suspense and adventure in a space inhabited by planetary computers, artificial intelligences, holograms, robots and chaos, where nothing is sacred and no being is safe, because somewhere out there lurking in another dimension, are things designed to kill.
