Holly Crozier has been brought up in the USA with only her brother, Jim, and Xenophobic mother as her only known relatives. After Jim leaves for London and spends three years working for an art dealer, he is brutally killed in a hit-and-run accident, with there being no trace of the driver.

When her mother dies when she is just twenty-three, Holly is drawn to England, holding onto the hope of finding Jim’s girlfriend, Caroline, and the baby she was carrying at the time of his death.

After arriving in London however, the enthusiasm Holly maintains at finding what little family she has left soon dwindles as she realises that finding Caroline is not a simple case of making a telephone call.

As she is put in touch with ex-colleagues of Jim’s and relatives of Caroline, she is drawn into the dark and secretive art world. She soon discovers that Jim’s death might not have happened how she thought and that she is in the middle of a dangerous battle that puts both herself and her new friends at risk...

Barbara Whitnell was trained as a teacher and taught in a village school in Cornwall before going to Kenya and Uganda where she married and had four children.
