A prequel book to the main Polar story wasn't exactly something I was expecting, but like a lot of prequels, it's sort of low-key fan service. This is a book that gives us more of the Black Kaiser before the main events of the first book, so it's a lot of him being awesome at what he does and a bit of backstory into the complications of Damocles and how he gets entangled with them. It's a fun independent adventure with good pacing but not much beyond that in terms of far-reaching implications. S...
Not the worse not the best,
I am a fan of Mads Mikkelsen, I got started on the Polar series after seeing the Netflix original film. I would say the series are visually heavy with a simple plot. The first volume introduces the Black Kaiser, which is not covered in the film - a cool beginning.
They pay him to kill.He lives in a world of faces without names, without futures. Two-dimensional images frozen in time. An amateur would be shaking like a leaf before each operation. He’s like a cold, tranquil lake. Its surface…frozen. Its depths…unreachable.Surrounded by the clutter of takeout and bottles of alcohol, a solitary figure sits in a hotel room, sniper rifle in hand, waiting for his opportunity, his target. The overwhelming amount of black on the page gives weight to the tension of th...
Heavily influenced by Jim Steranko's SHIELD and Frank Miller's Sin CIty. The Black Kaiser might as well be Nick Fury if he had left SHIELD at the end of the cold war to become a mercenary. The storytelling can be a bit obtuse especially when Santos eliminates the panels. All in all not a bad story though. I do like the inventive layouts that emulate Steranko and Walt Eisner. Victor Santos is a veteran Spanish comic artist making inroads to America now.Received a review copy from Dark Horse and E...
About 3.75Good story of politics, business and espionage. Art that will excite some, myself among them, but not for all I am sure.
What?! I expected so much more! I didn't really like the drawings, but I understand that it goes well with the atmosphere of the story. However what was the story? It was like an introduction to an introduction.
A great noir spy/assassin story. The art is striking very Frank Miller Sin City era.
I loved reading this nice looking hardback collection. This is how one should read Victor's Polar books! I have bought and read in e-book format for my Kindle. I loved that story plus the Netflix movie version. But these Polar books really come alive in the little hardback collections. I already have Volumes 2 and 4 in hardback, and will order #3 soon. With Volume O, we get a good background story on the Black Kaiser. I really enjoyed the art, the story/plot, and the characters....
