June's graphic novel book group book."What if Frank Miller but the fash are the bad guys?"It probably helps a lot that I've read very little Frank Miller, but the grindhouse/B movie story of a woman taking revenge on a group of one dimensional neo-Nazis was a reasonable read, with violence and gore and lots of fash meeting nasty ends. This one split my book group quite a lot. While everyone agreed the plot was light and the characterisation even lighter, there was a disagreement over whether or n...
No real character development. No real plot except for, these guys did something bad to me, I'll kill them all.The main character becoming a bounty hunter at some point in her life randomly makes its way into the story with no background at all. Doesn't really serve a point to the story either?...The artwork is decent.I understand the trouble that goes into creating something like this regardless of the story quality and that's why it's hard for me to give it a lower rating.
3.5
DPL hoopla
If you're looking for a revenge story, this is it. A bunch of backwards hick white supremacists get killed by a badass black woman, which is great, but I didn't find much of substance other than that.
This was a pretty light read. Don't expect much from it though, its a typical revenge story for more casual readers.
Honestly have no idea what it is that made me love this as much as I do but I do. I won’t lie. It is truly gruesome and there’s a lot of highly bloody and explicit scenes, but it fit very well into the style of this comic. I was slightly lost at first because I had totally forgotten what this was about, but you easily understand that you’re following Hope through two different timelines as a killer. The whole revenge aspect was super well integrated and it made the whole story so much more inter...
Purile crap. The author is from Spain? Spain had a fascist dictatorship for awhile, and this is how he writes about "nazis".Don't waste your time on this.
Revenge is a side dish best served ______
What Robyn Hitchcock is to Syd Barrett,I feel like Victor Santos is to Frank Miller.
Victor Santos definitely read Sin City and thought, "yeah, but what if neo-Nazis?" Against Hope features Hope, a young woman who's friend was killed by neo-Nazis, getting revenge on said neo-Nazis. Apparently, she's a bounty hunter, but that point is pretty much ignored in place of relentless ultra-violence.Against Hope follows two timelines: teen Hope being chased by the neo-Nazis and adult hope getting revenge on the neo-Nazis. Actually, the first timeline features revenge too. Basically, this...
I'm not sure how I feel about this racial revenge story. The simplicity of the story seems a little out of step with the world we live in now but if you want to see a bunch of Sounthern white sepremicists get what they have coming to them this book delivers big time.
I must confess that since I read the "Polar" series that I absolutely love Victor Santos stories and art.He has a remarkable cinematic sense for devising transitions between scenes, that keeps the story always moving forward, in a non-stop kinda way.The stories are violent, visceral and honest, and keep you at the edge of the seat up until the very end.If you enjoyed "Polar", you'll love "Against Hope". It's powerful and a blast to read. You can peek a preview of the book (without dialogue), orig...
