How I healed myself from ‘n’ number of disorders and health challenges and gained back my fitness at 56+ is a remarkable accomplishment. People often wondered and asked me, why I am drifting from my formal field of Biotechnology to the field of yoga. I had strong reasons to substantiate this. Yoga gave me so much peace, health and happiness that I want to inspire, motivate and extend these benefits to others.

I suffered a spinal injury in a road accident and remained immobile for three months. I recovered from this trauma by mere exercising. Since childhood, I suffered from acute rhinitis and asthma. I was sick of all the medications including steroids, frequent IV injections and nebulization. After suffering for more than two decades, I finally contemplated to try yoga. I tried out basic and intermediate levels of yoga. Thanks to yoga, I got rid of my wheezing and rhinitis completely in a period of one year. This convinced me to be a diligent yoga practitioner despite a very tight work schedule. Unfortunately, I had to undergo a series of three major abdominal surgeries . The Bilateral Salpingo Oopherectomy, that I underwent in 2013, almost devastated my general health over a period of two years. The long-term effects of the surgery were debilitating. The ghastly invasive surgery ruined my intestine, colon, rectum, urinary bladder and the entire parametrium wall due to acute adhesions. The physiological effect of this surgery was awful palpitation, hot flashes, bone loss, severe gastro-intestinal disorders, very poor digestion, decreased immunity, rhinitis , arthritis, rheumatoid arthritis, lumbar spondylitis, all of which besieged me in a span of two years. This led to severe depression and loss of interest in my day-to-day activities.

Although I continued practicing simple instructor-led yoga, there was something missing. I was unable to perform the asanas as effortlessly as before. I wanted something more to restore my health. Meditation, pranayama and therapeutic yoga attracted me and I signed up for an in-depth one year Diploma in Yoga Therapy by thesis. The course acquainted me with yogic philosophy of acceptance, equanimity and the immense mental strength that can transform a person. During this period, I thoroughly understood the significance of yogic diet and lifestyle modifications, which restored my health to a great extent. I discovered the right form of therapeutic yoga for recuperating from illness or injury. Mindfully practicing therapeutic yoga made me aware of what was happening inside me. The strong focus on breath and the customized sequences brought more blood flow to the recovering targeted tissues. The simple and specific asanas, performed correctly with static postures, were more beneficial than complicated asanas. The gentle but effective practice with restorative postures creates space in areas that are compressed, relieves muscle tightness, releases mental blocks and helps induce relaxation. The intention is to create safe movement patterns so that circulation can heal, rejuvenate, regenerate and restore health completely. The encouragement of my friends primed me to bring out a series of five volumes on Therapeutic Yoga in which I have compiled all that I learnt from my Gurus of Yoga, Ayurveda and other alternative therapies. My Asana postures in the manuals were performed to the best of my ability while I was still recuperating and some may not be very accurate. Regret the inaccuracy. Five most significant things I learnt during this period is – honour your body, eat right, forgive, let go things that no more serve you, live in present and be OK with it. I trust my experience will motivate and inspire you to take up the practice of yoga religiously.
