§ Riis immigrated to New York City in 1870. He soon found himself hungry and living in police lodging houses.
§ In 1877, Riis found work as a police reporter with the intent of closing the lodging houses in New York City. He soon began to incorporate photography to increase the impact of his writings.
§ Riis was the first photographer to use a flash with his work. He was able to document life in the lodging houses and the streets at night.
§ In 1890, Riis’s book, How the Other Half Lives, influenced New York police commissioner, Theodore Roosevelt, to close the police lodging houses and bring about reform in housing laws.
§ Riis was instrumental in exposing the need for reservoirs with clean water for the city and parks for people and children to play away from the tenement neighborhoods.
