Hero's Heart

Hero's Heart

Ray Calabrese
0/5 ( ratings)
Hero's Heart a contemporary western about two men, a rugged, time tested west Texan, Brett Taylor and a brash, undisciplined eighteen-year-old kid, Jake Paley. When Paley crosses Taylor’s path he discovers a man who is unafraid to stand for what is right and untarnished by greed and envy, a man’s man in the eyes of those who know him. Taylor, Paley discovers, is a man of honor.  Paley learns there are unwritten rules as to how a man behaves, and the rules are enduring. In learning how to become a man, Paley finds himself caught in Taylor’s life and death struggle, with a ruthless neighboring rancher who will commit any form of evil to get what he wants.
Taylor’s family owns a ranch the family held for four generations. A neighboring rancher, Frank Connor and his three sons, covets the ranch, rich in native grazing land and water.   The Connors’ will stop at nothing to get what they want including murder. The result is a drama of courage, honor, and coming of age.
Brett Taylor is a tough, stand by your friends, hold your ground man. He lives by a code many call old fashioned; he refuses to change because in his words, “It’s what you do.” Taylor’s handshake and word mean something. Taylor plucks Paley, angry and lost, off the street, and brings him to his ranch. He offers him room and board for the summer and tuition at a community college in the fall. Paley, with nowhere else to go, grudgingly accepts.
Paley meets Taylor’s best friend Tony Sanchez, who works the ranch with him. He hates Mexicans, insults, and refuses to take direction from Sanchez. Taylor pulls Paley aside and tells him that Sanchez is a former Marine and Medal of Honor winner and that he, Paley, will never be Sanchez’s equal.
Paley walks away from Ranch filled with anger and shame into the west Texas desert. There he spends three days and nights, confronting real and imagined demons before making the decision to return to the ranch, the one place where he has chance to learn to become a man. Never dull, never slow, and hard to put down, Death at Sunrise is a tale of hope and redemption. It’s unforgettable characters find themselves in a place that demands courage or death. At the end, readers will wish there was more.
