Haleakala Ranch and its verdant pasturelands still define upcountry Maui. In addition to its cattle business, the Ranch has always pursued goals of land stewardship, diversified agriculture, and community benefit, decades before these watchwords became fashionable. Since its founding in 1888, the only constant has been change. Uncertain economic times, wars, droughts, fires, natural disasters and other adversities have tested the Ranch and its people, and they have consistently responded with hard work, diligence, and innovation. Today, Haleakala Ranch encompasses some 29,000 acres on the slopes of majestic Haleakala, Maui’s 10,000-foot volcano. The Ranch is one of Maui’s largest landowners and spans terrain from high-altitude alpine and native forest to temperate pastureland, subtropical rain forest, and dry leeward coastal regions. "Haleakala Ranch: Celebrating the 125th Anniversary" contains six chapters that record the origins of the ranch from the mid-1800s and document the five generations of the Baldwin family that have subsequently guided its operations. The many businesses endeavors in which the ranch has been involved over the decades are described, from cattle to corn lands, the dairy business to forestry, from pineapple to eco-tourism. Generations of cowboys and ranch families are chronicled, together with the colorful activities with which the ranch has been associated over the decades, including polo, horseracing, and rodeo. The book contains a comprehensive accounting of places and place names on Ranch lands. Photos from the private collections of family members and Ranch employees – many never before published -- add a vivid dimension to the stories of Maui in days gone by. Haleakala Ranch: Celebrating the 125th Anniversary received the Interpretive Media Award from the Historic Hawai‘i Foundation in 2015. Oxford-educated author and Maui resident John Harrisson has more than 35 published titles.
