Isak Burger was probably one of the longest serving church leaders in South Africa. He was chosen president of the AFM of SA in April 1988. Ever since he was re-elected - also after the racial integration and unification of the church in April 1996. He retired in September 2016.

He was born on 10 May 1951 in Cape Town, but grew up in Pretoria. He did his theological studies and doctorate at the theological faculty and Seminary of the Dutch Reformed Church at the University of Pretoria.

He pastored two churches from 1974 before he became a lecturer and registrar of the AFM Theological College in 1982.

Over the years Isak Burger became known as preacher and writer. He regularly speaks at interdenominational meetings as well as national and international conferences. He is author and co-author of a number of top selling books and numerous articles in magazines and newspapers. He’s book, “The First Five Minutes after Death” reached unprecedented circulation figures.

He is one of the founder-members of Christian television in South Africa and was often seen on TV. His voice is also regularly heard on radio.

For a number of years he had been a director of Radio Pulpit. He was member of the host-committee of the memorable Rustenburg 1 and co-chair of Rustenburg 2 conferences. He was also member of the steering committee and also speaker at SACLA 2.

Isak is serving on the Advisory Committee of the World Pentecostal Fellowship since the early nineties and in 2004 was elected member of the executive of this esteemed body. He was co-chair of the host-committee of the 20th World Pentecostal Conference being held in South Africa in 2004. In October 2010 he was elected vice- chairperson of the Pentecostal World Fellowship until his retirement in 2016.

Isak places a high premium on a healthy and fit body and visits the gym regularly. He also enjoys his annual hunting and angling trips.

He is married to Heletia and they have three children - a son and two daughters as well as 3 grandchildren. They live in Silver Lakes in Pretoria.
