Don't get me wrong, it's a cute story, but the plot was so choppy. The introduction we are given to the world this story is set in wasn't clear to me and seemed all over the place. There was no clear cut sentence telling me the backstory of this world and that ruined some of the story. I also didn't understand some of the plot line involving certain characters within the story. All in all, two stars.
the crackhead humor part of me wants to read this while the fairytale lover in me is curious how this is gonna play out
The world building is a little odd. Not a terrible story but probably not my favorite.
The H is hybrid, reviled by his father and society, the h is valued for what she does for others. I found the story lacking some context, I was lost for some time trying to follow the 'colloquial' language of this odd world. The heroine was very brave and showed the H how much she cared, and he was lost to her. Very different, I thought the world and character development was underdone.
*WARNING* contains sexual contentI think the the fairytale of the "Ugly Duckling" and this one are really nothing alike, although, I believes the moral is the same, but you should read it and judge for yourself. This is definitely different with the frenesia concept (not telling what that is). Genetically modified beings traded for technology. All things sci-fi, not to wordy and of course an HEA for the perfect SFR.
Oh, I liked this one. A powerful man who's internalized all the abuse his father has thrown at him for being a hybrid and a woman who chooses to see more than the surface and who gently guides said man into accepting himself with her own acceptance. GOOD STUFF.Atrates is...he's kind of like an unsocialized animal when he first crosses paths with Cisnetta. He grumps and snarls and is not good with social cues. He also dislikes this failing in himself and that makes him even grumpier. Fortunately
A lovely, fun, sweet read with a historical flair that had me smiling almost the entire time! Cisnetta was a wonderful woman, so understanding and patient, and perfect for Atrates. As for Atrates, our hero, I adored the foul tempered, possessive, insecure man. And his relationship with with Cobbs, Cisnetta's pet swan, was just hilarious. Wonderful writing, and amazing world-building, especially for a shorter read. And the heat between the hero and heroine was through the roof! Loved it!
I don't read much sci-fi and this book reminded me of why I usually don't. Names that I'm not sure I'm pronouncing correctly, the siphoning bezeten (and similar things) that isn't something that I can relate to. (I'm totally unimaginative). What I did like here is the rest of the story. I like Cisnetta and Astrates. I even liked Cobb. I probably would have been more into it if it had been told without the extra elements mentioned above. Even though the sci-fi elements are hard for me to get into,...
Couldn’t get into it The premise was interesting but I just couldn’t get interested enough to finish. Read to about page 100. It was written in a Victorian era voice and that proper, flowery writing style has never appealed to me. I also dislike when there is more inner monologue than actual dialogue between the characters. When a question is asked and, 4 pages later, it still hasn’t been answered because the character is lost in his/her own head...it’s too much. I’ve enjoyed the Honey Phillips/...
Holy wow!How did I not know about this book, or this author? I read a collaborative effort that was so unimpressive I couldn’t even drudge through it all, but that discovery led me here and thank the powers that be that it did!! The surreal feel of the narrative is superlative. I never expected it. I have fallen in love with the satirical regard with which these characters’ thoughts and beliefs are unapologetically dropped in our laps. Moreover, the cleverness with which they interact with each
I really didn't love it or hate it enough to write a long review, so here- enjoy this gif of an angry swan.
Complicated but interesting worldI almost gave up on the book because it was a struggle to understand at first. The author drops the reader into a complicated world with names for people and things that are not intuitive at all (farsim for cell phone), and she doesn’t really explain things until later. However, I stuck with it because there was an interesting twist on how males and females need each other. Ultimately I was glad I finished the book, although I wish it had been longer so that the
How does one describe this story? 1 part Regency/historical romance1 part Sci-Fi with tech and an alien speciesAttempt to blendSprinkle in some fairytale elements...and add a black swan sized dash of humor. This tale was interesting and interesting. I enjoyed it, but I'm not sure I would say it was successful, if that makes sense. Let's start off with the biggest contributor to the lower ratings on this one: backstory/world building. We've become so accustomed—in all forms of media—to having our...
I'd like to think by now I've read my fair share of sci fi romance and this is without a doubt the most confusing story I've ever read. I thought about quitting multiple times because I could not follow what was going on. And even after finishing it, I'm not quite sure I understand the Frenesia...or whatever it is. What is bezeten? Why is it important? What does it mean to their race? I'm not going to say I'm the brightest crayon in the box, but I'm also not the dullest, so if I missed all these...
First, the blurb was misleading about the nature of the relationship between the hero and the heroin. Second, the author didn't take enough time to explain her world and the first few pages got me confused.Third, I'd tell it's more a retelling of beauty and the beast than it is of the ugly duckling, since we have a self-sacrificing heroin with a really good heart and an ugly brute (or thought ugly by almost everyone) who can't speak nicely to her... except she doesn't let it get under her skin a...
Very inventive retelling of The Ugly DucklingThe story was very sexy, but the sex was not gratuitous, but necessary for the movement of the story. The h has bodily secretions that need to be siphoned off by a partner of the opposite sex. Not necessarily by someone that she is in a relation and her partner needs to be the taker, else they both go into a condition that is most uncomfortable. All of the characters involved are multifaceted and interesting. At no time did I feel that anyone acted tstl....
Ok - Liked itThis author is never going to be a favorite of mine. The problem is that what the characters seem to get from the subtext of a scene is invariably not at all what I understood from the subtext of the scene. That said I did like the story and I found the idea for the world intriguing. It’s a bit short, the characters go from meeting each other to love in days. Not unusual for sci-fi romance, but if you like a slower buildup this might not be the book for you.
AmazingI think this is the first time I've come across an adaptation of this story, at least a romance adaptation, and let me tell you, it was very well done! For a shorter novel the world was well fleshed, the characters were in depth, and the plot was well paced. I kinda want a series about these hybrids now.
Enjoyed this book tremendously!I picked this book because it popped up as a suggestion, so happy I read it. Good storyline, with a grumpy but loving hero and heroine who loves and soothes his aching heart. I happily finished the story in one read, and was left with a soft happiness.
A fairytale fantasy! This story just doesn’t want to be stuck in a single category. It’s fairytale, with sci-fi setting, in a country firmly ensconced in days of yore. I adore our broody hero and his helpful, rescuing lady-love. The quirky, humorous phrasing tickles my fancy. The word-play is fun! There are many allusions to the Ugly Duckling fairytale, but this is a unique story that delivers the same moral message. Colorful, witty, and thoroughly enjoyable!
